ASPCA lists 5 ways to protect pets during hurricanes

ASPCA lists 5 ways to protect pets during hurricanes

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has released five expert tips on keeping pets safe during a disaster.

The ASPCA (https://www.aspca.org/) has activated its disaster response team in anticipation of potential evacuation, rescue, and sheltering needs before, during, and after the hurricane.

Pet owners are urged to take the following steps:

  • If you evacuate, take your pets with you. Never leave your pets behind or tether them to poles or trees, which prevents them from escaping high waters and getting to safe areas.
  • Make sure all pets are wearing ID tags with up-to-date contact information. Consider micro-chipping your pet as a more permanent form of identification.
  • Create a portable pet emergency kit with items including medical records, water, water bowls, pet food and your pet’s medications.
  • Choose a designated caregiver, such as a friend or relative outside the evacuation zone, who can take care of your pet in the event you are unable.
  • Download the free ASPCA mobile app, which allows pet owners to store crucial pet records needed for boarding pets at evacuation shelters.

“It’s critical for pet owners to consider their animals when preparing for any disaster, and we strongly urge them to always bring their animals with them if they have to evacuate their home,” said Tim Rickey, vice president of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response team.

“The ASPCA stands ready to assist animals in Hurricane Irma’s path, but the first and best line of defense for a pet will always be a well-prepared owner.”

A man holding his dog walks in water in greater Houston area of Texas, Aug. 27, 2017

As human victims of Houston flooding struggle to find shelter, many of their dogs, cats, horses, cattle and other four-legged and winged creatures that depend on human care for survival are being abandoned and lost
The Humane Society of the United States, Wings of Rescue, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), GreaterGood.org and other organizations are flying homeless dogs and cats from Texas shelters to facilities in other parts of the country to make room for the influx of thousands of homeless animals being picked up in the hurricane-devastated areas.

Are There Any Safe Candy For Dogs?

Are There Any Safe Candy For Dogs?

candy_dog_toy

Short answer is yes with a but.  Only safe candies for your dogs are the toy candies such as OoMaLoo handmade Candy Dog Toy.

Unfortunately all other candies are can cause several health problem for our furends. While eating a small amount of sugar or a sweet containing sugar is not extremely dangerous, it’s best to avoid feeding these kinds of foods to our dogs.

Pure sugar contained food can cause sever gas and diarrhea. Also please keep in mind that sugar free sweet stuff doesn’t mean healthy for our dogs.  Most of the time sugar free means it contains Xylitol, a sugar-substitute. Xylitol is perfectly safe in people, but it can be deadly if ingested by a dog or cat. Xylitol causes a very severe drop in blood sugar that can happen within minutes after ingestion.

Another sweet which is perfectly good for humans but not our dogs is Chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to pets and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and seizures.

WE CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY

Cat and Dog

International Cat Day is a full 24 hours of recognition and veneration of one of humanity’s oldest and most beloved pets. The festivities were put together for the first time in 2002 by IFAW, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, among other animal rights groups, to celebrate the most popular pet on the planet.

Cat-Heart_Red
OoMaLoo heart cat toy is hand knit with polyester yarn and contains catnip for your cat’s delight

An estimated 500 million cats are thought to be frolicking in neighbours’ gardens across the world, whichmeans that most every extended family is bound to have an aunt with more kittens than former husbands, whatever the country or climate. And that’s great, because owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. So when it’s raining cats and dogs outside and you don’t have someone to cuddle with, any black, ginger, Persian, Siamese, Burmese, Bengal, Shorthair, Munchkin, Balinese, RagaMuffin or any old stray cat will do the trick. Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?

Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?

handmade ice cream for dogs

Long word short No! You shouldn’t share your ice cream with your dog unless you want to make them sick.

Dogs’ bodies are not designed to digest milk after they arepuppies. Since ice cream is made with milk, feeding your dog ice cream could lead to gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or vomiting.

The second problem with ice cream is that it is loaded with sugar. Sugar is harmful to adult furends or Puppies. Giving too much sweet treats to your furend lead to getting overweight at least. And even the ice cream says it does not have sugar it means it has other sweeteners such as xylitol which can be more harmful then sugar for your four legged family member.

Alternatives to Ice Cream:

A froyo (froze yogurt) can be a good alternative or you can give him OoMaLoo handmade Ice Cream Dog Toy.  Continue reading Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?
